White House TV Pool Returns After Networks Stood With CNN

White House television pool reporting resumed on Friday after a days-long hiatus, following the administration's decision to bar CNN from participating in the rotation. The five networks comprising the pool—ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, and NBC News—reinstated pool coverage once CNN regained access to the White House grounds on Thursday.

CNN secured a pool assignment for Friday at the National Archives, where President Trump was to tour the complex with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while CBS handled pool coverage at the White House.

The networks had suspended their rotating pool coverage on Monday after the White House prevented CNN from fulfilling its scheduled duties. In a move to maintain continuity, the other four networks opted not to replace CNN, resulting in several presidential events lacking the independent television footage typically distributed to news organizations globally.

The return of the pool coverage came a day after U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the Trump administration to restore access to White House grounds for CNN, MSNBC, and Politico, all of which had sued after being denied entry last week.

Reporters from these outlets were initially denied entry on Thursday morning, despite the judge's order, before being allowed back onto the grounds around noon. Judge Kelly's ruling did not explicitly address CNN's role in the TV pool; the networks continued withholding pool coverage that day while awaiting confirmation that CNN would resume its regular duties.

This led to a partial blackout of the pool coverage during the White House's state dinner for President Xi and Ms. Liu on Thursday night. Some CNN journalists were denied access to cover Xi's arrival for the state dinner, while MS NOW White House correspondent Laura Barrón-López was also turned away.

The legal dispute remains unresolved, with Judge Kelly's temporary restraining order in effect for 14 days while the lawsuit by CNN, MSNBC, and Politico continues.
