WATCH: Comic Con Africa cosplayers bring favourite characters to life

Comic Con Africa once again united fans, creators, and pop culture enthusiasts in Johannesburg. The event showcased gaming, comics, anime, movies, and television through immersive experiences and creative displays. Cosplay was a major highlight, with fans bringing their favorite characters to life through intricate costumes. At Comic Con Africa 2026, cosplayers shared the characters that inspired their creations.

One attendee donned the costume of The Terror from Genshin Impact, focusing on the Moon God form for their design. Another cosplayer, known as Soft, drew inspiration from their own creative ideas. Light Shadow also exhibited a unique interpretation of a character. Chainsaw Man was another popular source of inspiration, with a fan dressing as Denji after recently watching the anime series. The costume took about two days to complete.

Some cosplayers were inspired by popular film and television franchises. Gothic Nerd King, also known as Joshua Lange, drew inspiration from Silent Hill Homecoming. He spent three to four weeks creating a fully hand-made and hand-painted costume. Dan Jordan chose a character from The Mandalorian and the Star Wars universe, utilizing a 3D printer and scanned prop files to recreate the character's equipment. The pieces were then sanded, primed, and precisely replicated for a screen-accurate appearance.

Megan White and her cosplay partner chose characters from the anime Witch Hat Atelier. They enjoyed watching the series together before crafting their costumes, making almost everything themselves, including the main costume pieces. Only non-handmade items such as leggings, shoes, and hair were excluded. The creativity and dedication showcased by Comic Con Africa's cosplay community highlights the passion and time invested in bringing beloved characters to life.
