UN media tent to close due to weather alert in New York

A severe weather alert in New York has prompted the closure of the media tent at the UN General Assembly. On Friday evening, the National Weather Service issued a storm warning, anticipating strong winds. The media center for journalists covering the General Assembly, along with the entrance on 47th St, closed at 4pm and will remain shut on Saturday.

According to a media liaison, all equipment, outdoor canopies, and tents must be cleared from the area as soon as possible. Despite the weather alert, speeches at the General Assembly are scheduled to continue without interruption. The Assembly has gathered world leaders from approximately 200 countries and territories in the largest city in the United States.

Taking place in September, the start of hurricane season on the US East Coast, storms frequently impact travel, leading to flight delays at regional airports. The UN has repeatedly warned about severe weather and natural disasters linked to climate change. In June, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Centre forecasted a greater than 90% probability of a very strong El Nino, which will influence weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere during the autumn and winter.
