This Month in Redox - August 2026

August 2026 brought exciting developments to the Redox OS project. Wildan Mubarok enhanced UEFI compatibility, enabling booting on the MSI Modern 14 C7M laptop. lbecher added multi-core support for AArch64/ARM64 architectures and made necessary adjustments. Ibuki Omatsu and Anhad Singh developed a ring buffer communication API, Redox Rings, akin to Linux io_uring system call API, which significantly boosted I/O performance for NVMe driver, RedoxFS, and RAMFS.

Following months of research, Wildan identified and rectified a kernel memory leak that had exacerbated compilation times in GCC, reducing the process from 10 hours to approximately 30 minutes. Aadarsh introduced the initial support for NUMA-based memory management, while Akshit Gaur added process priority and system priority tuning features, further optimizing overall performance. Akshit also authored the final EEVDF article detailing these optimizations.

Ribbon and Wildan verified that QEMU functions correctly within Redox, albeit acknowledging the potential for slower performance due to the absence of KVM-like virtual machine acceleration. Additionally, Wildan improved the Redox installer's Linux support, facilitating dual-boot installations, and a diagram explaining the openat function's role in path resolution within capability-based security was created by Ibuki Omatsu.

4lDO2 also profiled kernel binary sizes to minimize memory usage and documented the relibc safety philosophy and goals, emphasizing the minimization of undefined behavior and logic bugs via restricted unsafe code and enhanced Rust-like error handling.
