The Blueprint for Democrats to Win Back Voters

The year of the Democratic socialist has arrived, but the group that sparked the seismic shift in the Democratic Party almost didn't survive the 2022 elections. After suffering significant losses due to heavy spending from AIPAC, Justice Democrats was on the brink of being forgotten. Communications director Usamah Andrabi explained that the group almost endorsed no new candidates that year, as they were focused on defending against AIPAC's enormous $100 million spending.

However, Justice Democrats defied expectations, having its most successful primary season ever and making significant gains despite being heavily outspent. Andrabi emphasized that the group won big this year because they tapped into the frustration among voters directed at Democratic Party leaders. They understood that voters were seeking a fighter against corporate establishment, AIPAC, and crypto and AI.

This week, Andrabi spoke to The Intercept Briefing host Akela Lacy about Justice Democrats' impressive gains in the primaries and their plans for leveraging their wins beyond November. This primary season, the group endorsed 15 candidates, seven of whom won, including Darializa Avila Chevalier, Melat Kiros, and Donavan McKinney, who all knocked out incumbents.

Andrabi highlighted that these victories demonstrate a blueprint for energizing the party and excite their base, suggesting that the Democratic Party must take lessons from the left or risk losing power to a fascist regime.
