Tesla Marked the Start of High Volume Semi Production, and the Engineering Story Sits Underneath the Cab

On September 24, Tesla began producing its electric semi trucks at a dedicated factory in Sparks, Nevada. The plant, which spans 1.7 million square feet, is designed to manufacture 50,000 trucks per year. While the first truck rolled off the line in April, the inauguration marked a coming-out party for a program that had been in development since 2014.

The Semi factory is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including in-house 4680 battery cells, a steel cage rotor, and an electric steer-by-wire system. These upgrades have significantly improved the truck's performance, with the team reporting a 25% increase in efficiency compared to their initial target of 2,000 watt-hours per mile.

The truck's range is currently 325 miles for the standard variant and 500 miles for the long-range variant, both of which are based on real-world usage with a loaded payload of 82,000 pounds.

One of the most notable design changes is the addition of a roll-down window, which was requested by customers to accommodate badge readers, toll booths, and call boxes. This design decision highlights Tesla's commitment to continuously improving their products based on customer feedback. Additionally, the truck's thermal system is the same indirect design used across tens of millions of Tesla vehicles, eliminating the need for refrigerant lines and reducing maintenance requirements.
