Super Eagles Survive Madagascar Scare to Win 2-1

The Nigerian national team, known as the Super Eagles, began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign on a tense yet victorious note by defeating Madagascar 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The match saw the hosts struggle to break through Madagascar's defense, with the visitors eventually taking the lead through Couturier.

Nigeria started the match brightly, but their attempts to find a response were largely unsuccessful. Samuel Chukwueze, a key player for Nigeria, showed promise with his dribbling skills but failed to capitalize on his opportunities.

The Super Eagles fell behind early in the game when Ehsan Kari scored a goal for Madagascar in the 16th minute. The hosts continued to push for a response, with Alex Iwobi having the ball in the net in the 34th minute; however, the goal was disallowed due to an infringement by Akor Adams on the Madagascar goalkeeper. Nigeria equalized in first-half stoppage time when George Ilenikhena scored his first goal for the Super Eagles, after receiving an assist from Alex Iwobi.

The match saw Ilenikhena making his Super Eagles debut as a forward, after being called up by Éric Chelle to start the game. The Super Eagles managed to extend their lead in the 65th minute through another debutant, Moses Usor, who scored his first goal for Nigeria after being assisted by Semi Ajayi. The victory secured three points for Nigeria in their opening Group L fixture as they aim to qualify for the 2027 Afcon.

The Super Eagles will now focus on their second Group L fixture against Guinea-Bissau on September 29 in Morocco.
