Sports Minister raises concern over replacement of natural grass fields with astroturfs

Kofi Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has expressed worry over the growing conversion of natural grass playing fields and recreational areas into artificial turf facilities. Concerns were raised about the potential environmental, health, and developmental impacts during the conclusion of the 14th edition of the Ghana Garden and Flower Show on Monday.

The Ghanaian government has been investing in community football pitches and recreational parks to boost grassroots sports development in recent years. However, Mr. Adams cautioned that the trend of replacing natural grass fields with artificial turf, also known as Astroturf, could have detrimental effects on the environment, public health, and athlete development.

The minister pointed out that natural grass fields play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and improving air quality, especially in venues hosting large crowds. He highlighted that numerous natural playing fields have been demolished and replaced with artificial surfaces, leading to significant damage to the country's green spaces and environmental infrastructure.

Mr. Adams urged policymakers, local authorities, sports administrators, and communities to collaborate in safeguarding green spaces while advancing sports infrastructure development. He emphasized that preserving natural grass fields would contribute to healthier lifestyles, environmental protection, and sustainable urban growth.
