Seven under investigation after deadly accident at Rome’s Colosseum

Seven individuals are under investigation following the death of a 22-year-old worker at Rome's Colosseum. The accident occurred on Tuesday when Andrea Moretti fell approximately 10 meters between the second and third levels of the ancient amphitheatre during the installation of a new lighting system. Two other workers present at the time, including Moretti's brother-in-law, did not see the fall but heard the impact and alerted emergency services.

Upon arrival, they attempted to resuscitate Moretti, but he tragically died at the scene. The Colosseum, one of Italy's most popular tourist attractions, was closed for a day in remembrance of the young worker. Prosecutors in Rome have initiated an investigation into culpable homicide and potential violations of workplace safety regulations.

Seven people have been placed under investigation, with prosecutors examining the organization of the job, safety measures, and the chain of responsibility among the different companies involved. The investigation is also focusing on the equipment Moretti was using when he fell, as his safety rope was not attached when he was found, despite him wearing his harness and protective gear.

CCTV footage and a drone survey of the accident site have been collected to aid the investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, September 28, which, along with the technical examination of Moretti's safety equipment and other evidence, will help prosecutors establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and determine whether any workplace safety rules were breached.
