S. Korea wins silver in women's epee team fencing at Asian Games

Tokoname, Japan saw South Korea claim the silver medal in women's epee team fencing at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Friday. The country lost its Asiad title this time, as they were defeated by China with a score of 45-28 in the gold medal match. The Chinese team secured their win in the final bout at Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, located 35 kilometers south of the main host city of Nagoya, Japan.

South Korea had won this event at the previous Hangzhou Asian Games but finished as runners-up during the 2026 Games. Song Se-ra, who claimed the individual epee title on Tuesday, finished the team event in silver. Bronze medals were awarded to Singapore and Kazakhstan. Team fencing, including the epee event, consists of nine head-to-head bouts.

Each bout lasts three minutes, and the match ends when one team's score reaches a multiple of five. A team scores 45 points first or maintains more points than their opponent at the end of the ninth bout to emerge victorious.

In the epee event, fencers employ a thrusting weapon to target the entire body. South Korea took the lead after winning the first two bouts, with a narrow 7-6 advantage. However, China managed to pull ahead, taking a 15-13 lead in the third bout and holding onto it.
