Qatar urges global solidarity on pandemic preparedness at UN high-level meeting

New York - Qatar has called for enhanced global solidarity and equitable access to vaccines and treatments at a UN high-level meeting on pandemic preparedness, according to a report. Dr Maryam bint Ali Al Misnad, HE Minister of State for International Cooperation, made the plea during a UN meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response that took place on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.

Al Misnad emphasized that health is fundamental to sustainable development and wellbeing, and Qatar's National Vision 2030 prioritizes human development among its key pillars, guiding investment in healthcare infrastructure, services, and innovation. She further highlighted Qatar's commitment to an integrated healthcare system offering preventive and curative services, and the country's adherence to a comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable approach to pandemic and health-emergency preparedness.

The HE stressed that the Covid-19 pandemic underscored the necessity for resilient and inclusive health systems capable of handling major emergencies. She described the pandemic as a test of Qatar's preparedness and adaptability to an unprecedented health crisis. Al Misnad also noted that Qatar's substantial investment in healthcare enabled the nation to effectively manage the pandemic, leading to one of the lowest mortality rates among affected countries.

Furthermore, she highlighted Qatar's contributions to international humanitarian assistance, including medical and relief support during health emergencies. She commended the World Health Organization for its crucial role in tackling current and future health challenges. Al Misnad concluded by reiterating Qatar's commitment to bolstering international cooperation and ensuring equitable, sustainable access to preventive medical measures such as vaccines and treatments, thereby effectively addressing future pandemics.
