PURC warns of water supply challenges as Sekyere Hemang plant operates below capacity

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has expressed concerns over reduced water production from the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, which is currently generating less than 18,000 cubic meters of water, well below its estimated capacity of around 30,000 cubic meters. Executive Secretary Dr Shafic Suleman explained that this decrease is partially due to the operation of only one of the plant's three pumps.

During a visit to Cape Coast, Suleman warned that the water supply could be compromised, especially as the country approaches the dry season, which may further reduce water levels. He emphasized PURC's concern about potential water flow issues during the dry season and committed to working with the Ghana Water Company Limited to improve water production through intensified dredging at the plant's intake point.

Suleman assured that "if it will affect, it won't be that drastic," and expressed hope that the interventions would help maintain water supply to Cape Coast and surrounding communities.

Consumer complaints have been a significant issue for PURC, with over 1,200 complaints received since the start of the year. About 90% of these cases have been resolved, demonstrating the Commission's efforts to address consumer concerns and improve service quality. PURC is also planning to establish a toll-free contact center and a community service center in Agona Swedru to improve access to services for consumers who have to travel long distances to Cape Coast.

Additionally, the Commission has intervened in transformer-related challenges affecting 11 communities in the region and facilitated the resolution of a pipeline problem around Ekon, where disrupted infrastructure had caused water supply issues for nearly four months. Suleman highlighted concerns over damage to water pipelines along major road construction corridors in the Central Region, noting that such disruptions have affected water supply to several communities.

PURC and the Ghana Water Company Limited are actively working to repair damaged pipelines, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in addressing the issue across the region.
