Public urged to comment on Employment Services Amendment Bill

The Employment Services Amendment Bill, set to be introduced in the coming months, calls for public input over the next four weeks. This legislation aims to deter employers from hiring unregistered foreign nationals by imposing substantial fines of up to R100,000 per worker. It is part of the government's strategy to prioritize employment opportunities for South Africans while simultaneously tightening regulations surrounding illegal immigration.

Matthew Parks, a representative from Cosatu's Parliamentary liaison team, views the proposed bill as a positive step. He emphasizes that the legislation will ensure employers are fully accountable for any breaches of immigration or labor laws. The bill also requires employers to abide by labor laws, regardless of the nationality of the employees, whether they are South African citizens, foreigners, or undocumented immigrants.

One notable feature of the proposed bill is the potential to set foreign worker quotas, which Parks suggests could help manage immigration levels and ensure a fair distribution of employment opportunities amongst the South African workforce.
