PODCAST: ACDP councillor Mkhonza takes aim at corruption in Johannesburg

Norman Fana Mkhonza, an ACDP councillor from Johannesburg, recently spoke on The Movement podcast about the city's issues. He expressed concern over the city's leadership and management, stating that Johannesburg has abundant resources but poor management remains a significant issue.

Mkhonza emphasized that leaders must prioritize residents and ensure public money is used properly. He also called for the appointment of skilled individuals to senior positions, stating that political connections should not determine who gets important municipal jobs. Regarding Johannesburg's finances, Mkhonza highlighted that the city's debtors' book stands at approximately R72 billion, reflecting money owed by residents and organizations.

He questioned the city's reliance on loans and inquired whether sufficient funds are being spent on maintaining municipal buildings. Mkhonza pointed to the Johannesburg Property Company, noting its reported surplus yet poor maintenance of its buildings.

Water shortages are another major concern for Mkhonza. He mentioned communities that have gone years without a reliable water supply and cautioned against the spread of this issue. He also advocated for more scrutiny on water tanker contracts and regular financial reports from councillors to monitor the city's operations. Mkhonza expressed concern over corruption and political appointments in local government, urging senior positions to be awarded based on skills and experience rather than political favoritism.

He stressed the need for capable, trustworthy individuals to serve residents instead of personal interests, emphasizing that until this change occurs, Johannesburg's problems will persist.
