Pittsburgh doctor killed while he slept was "loved by all"

Dr. Idris Evans, a beloved Pittsburgh physician, met his untimely demise while asleep in a violent home invasion. The 46-year-old father and medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, died on Thursday after being repeatedly stabbed by intruder Elijah Hemingway. Evans was also an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Colleagues and friends have praised Evans for his kindness, compassion, and dedication to his patients. Renee Dellaera, a retired nurse who worked at UPMC Children's Hospital, described Evans as one of the best she ever worked with, noting his exceptional kindness, compassion, and humor. Dr. Hayley Hellstern, a pediatrician and colleague, called Evans a "true angel on Earth," praising his ability to put everyone at ease even in stressful situations.

The attack occurred in Evans' home along Linden Avenue in Edgewood Borough. Hemingway gained entry through an open window and proceeded to stab the couple as they slept. Evans' wife managed to survive the ordeal and alerted their 8- and 12-year-old children to flee the scene. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but the scene was described as extremely violent, with broken bedroom furniture and mirrors.
