PAS tak mungkin tinggalkan Wawasan, PN demi Umno

Political analysts believe PAS is likely to remain with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the 2016 General Election, even if Umno is more inclined towards cooperation among themselves. Sivamurugan Pandian from Universiti Sains Malaysia stated that PAS is more likely to open space for cooperation with the Barisan Nasional (BN) while maintaining relations with their PN allies.

PAS will not hastily leave Wawasan, as they may choose to work with BN and join forces with PN members, except for Bersatu, he told FMT. Although PAS has inclination to cooperate with Umno alone, Sivamurugan said leaving PN could complicate the narrative of unity among Malays and Islam that PAS advocates. The real test is whether PAS sees national unity as a broader principle for cooperation with other parties or just strategic cooperation with Umno, he added.

Awang Azman Awang Pawi from Universiti Malaya said Umno might eye seats currently held by Wawasan. Therefore, failure to reach agreement on who will contest those seats could force BN and PN to move independently in PRU16, he told FMT. If neither BN nor PN is ready to compromise or they fail to reach a compromise, PAS and Wawasan may ultimately stay together, while Umno may contest independently, he told FMT.

Awang Azman believes it is difficult for PAS to leave PN, deeming such statements mere rhetorical bravado ahead of the PRU16 in Melaka. He attributed the rise of Wawasan to PAS's main cause. Wawasan is a project under PAS's former leader, with many former Bersatu figures like Hamzah Zainudin, Beluran Ronald Kiandee, and Mas Ermieyati Samsudin serving as its key figures.

Days earlier, Bersatu chairman Dr Afif Bahardin sparked the possibility of PAS leaving PN to form a formal political alliance with Umno-BN, saying Bersatu is ready to revive PN if necessary. Political aide to PAS President Hadi Awang, Syahir Sulaiman, dismissed Afif's claim, stating that the issue of PN leadership must be decided by PN's highest council.
