Nigeria demands 2 permanent UN Security Council seats for Africa with veto powers

Nigeria has demanded at least two permanent seats for African countries on the United Nations Security Council, with veto powers, during President Bola Tinubu's national statement at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. Vice-President Kashim Shettima made the demand, arguing that Nigeria's position aligns with the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, which form the Common African Position.

This position seeks permanent seats for Africa, accompanied by five non-permanent seats, reflecting the continent's contributions to global affairs. Shettima emphasized that the current Security Council configuration no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities, weakening global decision-making legitimacy. He stressed that Africa cannot remain outside permanent membership while issues concerning the continent receive significant attention from the Council.

Shettima also noted that reforming the UN Charter, which would require approval by two-thirds of the General Assembly and ratification by the five permanent members, is essential for a more representative international body.
