New Jersey’s lieutenant governor resigns amid sexual harassment findings

New Jersey's Lieutenant Governor, Dale Caldwell, has resigned following an investigation that found he engaged in inappropriate behavior with women and committed other ethical violations, according to Reuters on September 25. Governor Mikie Sherrill had previously called for Caldwell's resignation. Caldwell's legal team, led by Thomas Calcagni, maintains they will fight the report and seek legal remedies to ensure a fair and unbiased record.

The investigation, released on Wednesday, detailed that Caldwell made sexually offensive remarks to female staff, including telling one that young women are seeking young sperm. Caldwell denied this statement, but investigators found his denial unconvincing. The report also alleges that Caldwell attempted to secure a promotion for a state employee with whom he had a romantic relationship and brought personal guests to ticketed events without payment.

Sherrill appointed Shirley Emehelu, the state’s acting comptroller, to serve as the new acting lieutenant governor. The governor stated she would decide on a permanent replacement within 45 days.
