‘Music Salon’ explores rich world of Arab maqams

In Doha, the Music Affairs Center, under the Ministry of Culture's umbrella, hosted a seminar titled "The Arab Maqam: Dimensions, Ajnas and Branches" as part of its 'Music Salon' initiative. This seminar invited participants on an immersive exploration of eight prominent maqams, each carrying unique characteristics.

The seminar was a rich blend of theoretical discourse and live performances. Amir Ayad, an esteemed oud player at the Music Affairs Center, performed alongside the Center's musical ensemble. Abeer Al Nimer, the seminar moderator, facilitated the engaging discussion.

Khalid Al Salem, the Director of the Music Affairs Center, highlighted the seminar's role in expanding musical understanding and bringing audiences closer to Arab music's core elements. He emphasized that while the maqam is a vital part of Arab music, its appreciation extends beyond specialists.

Al Salem asserted that understanding the maqam is not limited to the elite. It offers a broader perspective, enhancing appreciation for the unique nature and distinctiveness of Arab melodies. He further explained that the 'Music Salon' serves as a platform merging knowledge, active listening, and practical demonstration, thereby fostering greater awareness of Arab musical heritage.

Ayad, the seminar presenter, clarified that each maqam is more than a mere sequence of notes. It represents a musical identity, defining a melody's character and its expressive range. He noted that the seminar aimed to move beyond theory. Each segment was complemented by musical examples, enabling the audience to hear the discussed characteristics and discern the differences between the maqams through the music itself.
