Magnitude 3.5 Earthquake Felt Across Vega Baja and Murcia

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was felt across Vega Baja and Murcia on Friday morning, originating near San Javier. The quake was detected by Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) at 11:04am, with its epicenter located in San Javier, near Sucina at a depth of eight kilometers. The maximum intensity recorded was IV on the European Macroseismic Scale, indicating that the tremor could be felt indoors by many people without causing significant damage.

Residents in the affected areas reported feeling the sudden movement, with reports coming from communities near the epicenter and from towns across the Vega Baja. Local weather organizations Proyecto Mastral and MeteOrihuela also confirmed that the movement had been experienced in the region. The Murcia’s 112 emergency service received 35 calls related to the earthquake, but none of the calls reported injuries or property damage.

While the tremor caused concern among residents, there were no immediate consequences reported. The earthquake's relatively shallow depth likely contributed to its noticeable impact beyond the immediate epicenter. Southeastern Spain is known for its high seismic activity, where earthquakes of this magnitude can be felt across several nearby municipalities.
