Luci Gang cooks up fresh hip-hop flavor with latest album

Stepping into the basement venue in Sangsu was like reuniting with an old friend. The indie hip-hop scene in Seoul had been a constant source of enjoyment until the pandemic struck in 2020, when the magic seemed to fade away. Venues closed permanently, and global lockdowns coincided with a surge in Korean culture abroad, but the wave that emerged predominantly featured K-dramas and K-pop.

For some time, the local hip-hop scene lacked excitement. Then, the name Luci Gang appeared on a social media feed in mid-July. Although I was unfamiliar with them, the song and video immediately captured my attention, a two-minute house-infused, unapologetically quirky track that was hard to resist. This standout single forms part of her third album, Rolling Stone, released by independent rapper Luci Gang, whose real name is Lee Eun-seon.

She has spent six years crafting her music catalog outside the conventional label system. The song has gained traction, even appearing on rap legend Lupe Fiasco's Instagram story, which generated further support and demonstrated its resonance with international audiences.
