Lili Reinhart said Hollywood is "too afraid" to make a movie about "lesbian vampires"

This reluctance mirrors the difficulty queer stories face in general, as seen with Lilly Wachowski's Matrix co-creator, who is hesitant to produce a film with a "wall-to-wall trans cast." GLAAD's 2026 Where We Are In Film Study revealed a notable drop in LGBTQ character representation in films from the top 10 studio distributors in 2025.

Reinhart, undeterred, sees the queer aspect of a story as an added bonus, emphasizing her personal connection to such narratives. She has taken a more proactive role in her career since her breakthrough on The CW's Riverdale, acting and producing. The identity of the specific novella Reinhart aims to adapt remains unclear, though it could potentially be the 1872 Gothic novella Carmilla, which popularized the lesbian vampire trope.
