Lahore Traffic Police Launches Public Drive Against Smoke-Emitting Vehicles

The Lahore City Traffic Police has initiated a public outreach campaign to solicit reports from citizens regarding vehicles emitting excessive smoke, with the goal of combating environmental pollution. Residents are encouraged to record videos of such vehicles and transmit them to the traffic police via WhatsApp using the number 0322-5638888. The initiative aims to safeguard the environment and foster public cooperation, emphasizing that environmental maintenance is both a legal obligation and a shared responsibility.

In July, Lahore's Chief Traffic Officer, Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, announced that the driving licenses of operators of smoke-emitting vehicles would be suspended as part of efforts to mitigate smog and air pollution in the provincial capital. He also stated that route permits for commercial vehicles violating anti-smog regulations would be revoked, highlighting the necessity of stringent enforcement to safeguard public health and the environment.

Commercial vehicles, such as tractor-trolleys and dumpers carrying sand or soil without protective coverings, remain prohibited from operating in Lahore. As of the ongoing anti-smog crackdown, 1,013 cases have already been registered against violators. To enhance enforcement, the City Traffic Police in Lahore has established special teams at 12 entry and exit points of the city, in addition to 45 dedicated enforcement teams carrying out inspections throughout the city.
