Kuruman woman,18, in court for perjury after false rape case against police officer

An 18-year-old woman from Kuruman has been charged with perjury after allegedly filing a false rape complaint against a police officer. According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the incident occurred on September 23 at a guest house in Kuruman. The woman made the false allegation after the off-duty officer failed to pay her the agreed sum of R400 following consensual sex.

The alleged victim, who is a 24-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) Vehicle Investigation Unit constable, was arrested and appeared in Kuruman Magistrate's Court on September 26 on charges of rape. However, the rape charge was withdrawn before the court appearance when it was revealed the woman had admitted to making a false statement.

IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping stated that the woman appeared in court on September 27 and was released on warning. Her case was postponed until October 16 to allow her to secure legal aid. Suping emphasized that the alleged false report has serious implications for the justice system, as it diverts investigative resources away from genuine cases. She warned that false reporting would not be tolerated and that decisive action will be taken against those who misuse the justice system for personal gain.
