JR West to display retiring Doctor Yellow inspection train in Hiroshima Pref.

JR West will exhibit a discarded car from its Doctor Yellow shinkansen track inspection train, set to be withdrawn in January 2027, at a location in Hiroshima Prefecture, the railway operator has disclosed. The Doctor Yellow inspection train operates on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. The company announced the car will be accessible to the public for a fee starting in September 2027.

Doctor Yellow is a well-loved train distinguished by its yellow exterior and an undisclosed operating schedule. A similar Doctor Yellow train from Central Japan Railway Co. retired in January 2025 and its lead car can be viewed at the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park in Nagoya since June of that year. JR West opted to relocate the No. 7 lead car, equipped with signal-measuring equipment and other devices, to the Etajima training center managed by Kosei Corp., a subsidiary engaged in shinkansen maintenance, and construct a new exhibition facility there.

The facility will highlight railway maintenance technology. The ticket price remains unspecified. Doctor Yellow is considered a safety symbol that has guaranteed the well-being of the shinkansen, Toshimasa Iida, head of JR West's Hiroshima branch, stated at a news conference in Hiroshima. He added, "We hope that many individuals will enjoy discovering safety technology and it will also contribute to the revitalization of the area."
