Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz in 7 days: 3 conditions it has set for Trump

Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations within seven days, contingent upon three conditions from the United States. These conditions include lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports, waiving sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and observing a ceasefire, which would also encompass Lebanon.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made this proposal during a private gathering at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, as reported by The Associated Press. This comes amid heightened diplomatic efforts to end the conflict with the US, with the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy chokepoint, causing significant disruption and pressure on energy markets.

Iran has leveraged the disruption of shipping through the strait as leverage against the US. While there has been no official confirmation from Iran or other Iranian officials, the proposal resembles a June Memorandum of Understanding, albeit with a much more accelerated timeline. Past attempts to restore talks have failed due to mistrust and accusations of violations from both sides.

The US and Israel have also carried out attacks on Iran during nuclear negotiations, complicating the situation further. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's recent meeting with Qatar's prime minister and his indication of willingness for diplomacy further highlight ongoing diplomatic activity. However, it remains uncertain whether the proposal would cover the ongoing conflict involving Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia, as the latter's attacks have added pressure to global shipping and energy markets, threatening another major maritime chokepoint - the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea.
