iPhone 18 Pro Users Report Strange Green Patches in Photos

Users of the new iPhone 18 Pro are expressing concerns over strange green patches appearing in their photos and videos. Chinese news outlet Jiemian News has reported that the issue seems to occur more often in dark settings and under warm lighting conditions, particularly when using the camera at a 2x zoom or higher magnification. Interestingly, in some instances, the problem is not immediately visible in the camera preview but becomes apparent in the final, saved image.

One possible explanation for the phenomenon is the iPhone 18 Pro's innovative variable aperture feature on its main camera. This technology allows the camera to switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0 settings, enabling the device to capture more light when needed. However, Apple's f/1.48 setting, while maximizing light intake, may also be responsible for the green patches observed by users.

Mediastorm, a technology testing company, conducted its own examination of the new camera and confirmed that using the widest f/1.48 aperture results in significant flare, which could potentially explain the green patches.

While the variable aperture could be linked to the issue, strong light entering from the side during photographing also contributes to the flare effect. Closing the aperture to f/4 can significantly reduce this problem, but this does not conclusively prove that the green patches stem from the variable aperture feature. Additional testing is needed to determine the exact cause of the issue.

At present, Apple has not acknowledged receiving any user reports regarding the green patches or issued a repair program or software update specifically addressing the camera behavior. The company has not confirmed whether the problem represents a widespread hardware defect or if it affects only specific iPhone 18 Pro units. Consequently, more investigation is required to ascertain whether the issue is widespread or limited to certain devices.

Lens flare is not a new issue for smartphone cameras. Bright light sources, especially at night, can produce reflections and unwanted effects in photographs.
