Indiana Pacers GM reveals why they re-signed veteran enforcer James Johnson

Indiana Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan revealed the reasoning behind the team's decision to re-sign veteran forward James Johnson, despite the franchise lacking the financial resources to retain him on the initial roster. Johnson has committed to an Exhibit 9 training camp deal and will join the Pacers for camp, with the possibility of returning later in the season.

Buchanan emphasized Johnson's enduring value to the organization, citing his experience and understanding of the Pacers' culture. He stated, "No, I mean, obviously, you guys all know what James means to our locker room, our culture. He's a guy that we've had a real fondness for, obviously."

Although the Pacers cannot bring Johnson onto the opening-night roster due to their current salary-cap situation, Buchanan views the training camp as a crucial opportunity for the veteran to contribute. He noted, "There's value in him in our training camp situation because the training camp is a really big chance to set the table for your year. And both as how you play as a player, but also what you're about, your system, your culture."

Buchanan also praised head coach Rick Carlisle's approach to training camp and Johnson's role in helping younger players understand the coaching staff's expectations. He explained, "Coach Carlo is a big believer in evaluating how guys play in training camp and having a veteran like James who understands what the coaches want, understands the team, understands the system, to help establish what we're going to be about for the year. He's just a guy you love having around."

While there is no guarantee Johnson will return during the regular season, Buchanan stated that the Pacers will evaluate his health, performance, and roster needs before making that decision. Johnson's Exhibit 9 deal permits him to participate in camp without affecting the team's financial situation. For now, the Pacers clearly recognize his presence as valuable as they prepare for a new campaign.
