In Johor, Indonesian teen charged with trafficking over 25kg of illicit drugs

A 19-year-old Indonesian male, Nanda Afrizal, was charged at the Magistrates’ Court in Kluang on September 25 with two counts of trafficking illicit drugs, suspected to be heroin and methamphetamine, with a total weight of over 25 kilograms. Nanda, who works as a construction worker, acknowledged the charges after they were read out in court.

For the first charge, he is accused of trafficking heroin weighing 17,842 grammes in a room at a house in Taman Lian Seng on September 13. For the second charge, he is alleged to have trafficked methamphetamine weighing 8,109 grammes at the same location and time. Both offenses carry a potential death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction, along with a possible caning sentence of 12 to 15 strokes.

Nanda also faced charges for possessing methamphetamine weighing 5.25 grammes, which could result in a prison sentence of up to five years and whipping of three to nine strokes. This offense was brought under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Additionally, Nanda was charged with remaining in the country without reasonable cause after his social visit pass expired on October 8, under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

This offense carries a maximum fine of RM10,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both. Nanda pleaded guilty to this charge and was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment from the date of his arrest. The court denied bail and set a date of November 25 for further proceedings, including the submission of a chemistry report.
