I'm not tempted to call an early election, Burnham says

Andy Burnham has stated that the next General Election will be in 2029, firmly rejecting the idea of an early snap vote. During interviews with ITV North West and Yorkshire, Burnham confirmed the election's timing at the end of the current parliament. Speculation around a potential early election arose as the Prime Minister sought to bolster a mandate for social care reforms and increase flexibility on tax hikes. Burnham dismissed these rumors, stating, "I can knock that dead."

In a separate BBC East Midlands interview, Burnham reiterated the same response, firmly rejecting the call for an election in May. He emphasized his focus on delivering on discussed issues rather than engaging in self-serving politics. When asked about the possibility of an election, Burnham responded with a simple "no."

Ahead of the Labour Party conference, Burnham addressed several other topics. He expressed his desire to strengthen devolution further and defend the government's policies against criticism, particularly from Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Burnham also mentioned his openness to exploring options for Thames Water, acknowledging that privatisation for water companies needed to change.

He pointed out that Britain had gone down an unproductive path with water system management, leading to issues like high bills, water leaks, and sewage contamination in rivers and seas.

Burnham clarified that he did not take London's support for Labour for granted, working daily to justify people's support. He also addressed questions about his relationship with Mayor Sadiq Khan, stating that he recently agreed on a substantial housing funding package for London. Burnham affirmed his continued support for Khan as the next Labour candidate in London.
