Heritage Series Cedi notes to modernise cedi while preserving national identity – BoG

The Bank of Ghana has unveiled plans to launch a new series of Cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, aimed at modernizing the Ghanaian currency while maintaining its national identity. According to Dominic Owusu, the Bank's Director and Head of Currency Management, the initiative is not merely a replacement of existing notes but a strategic move to ensure the cedi remains secure, trusted, durable, and fitting for the future.

Owusu emphasized that the Heritage Series is a significant national symbol that embodies Ghana's sovereignty, economic identity, and national pride. He stated that the currency is more than just a medium of exchange; it represents the nation's economic strength and pride. The new series is scheduled to be officially unveiled on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.

Addressing the evolving technological landscape, Owusu highlighted how advances in digital technology have transformed various aspects of society, including the production and security of banknotes. He noted that just as search engines have evolved from Google to AI-driven platforms, the technology behind banknotes has also undergone significant advancements. This technological transformation necessitates periodic reviews of currencies issued by central banks to maintain their relevance and functionality.

The Bank of Ghana plans to enhance the durability and lifespan of the new banknotes while ensuring they remain secure and practical for everyday use. Despite these improvements, the Bank has cautioned the public not to take the enhanced durability as a license to mishandle the currency. Ghanaians are urged to continue handling banknotes with care to preserve their quality and integrity.

Additionally, the introduction of the Heritage Series does not invalidate existing banknotes. The current notes will continue to circulate alongside the new series, allowing the public to use both types post-launch. The Bank of Ghana aims to merge the historical and national significance of the cedi with modern enhancements in security, durability, and functionality. This comprehensive approach ensures that the currency remains trusted and well-suited for future economic needs.
