Halifax’s new top staffer says she’s ready to tackle growth challenges

Marnie Cluckie, who began her role as Halifax's chief administrative officer (CAO) just three days ago, is already making strides in addressing the municipality's growth challenges. As the new head of Halifax's administrative branch, Cluckie is dedicated to helping the community tackle issues like affordable housing, traffic congestion, and taxation. She emphasizes that while growth presents opportunities, it also brings unique challenges that must be addressed.

Taking over from acting CAO Brad Anguish, Cluckie has been working to align the organization with council's priorities. She aims to deliver meaningful outcomes for residents in the coming days and months, ensuring the city's administrative branch operates efficiently. Cluckie brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously served as city manager for Hamilton, Ontario, and CAO for Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

With a budget of $1.45 billion and overseeing approximately 5,000 employees, Cluckie's primary focus is on managing the challenges associated with growth, such as infrastructure maintenance, housing, and homelessness. Her previous experience in similar-sized municipalities has enabled her to learn from the successes and pitfalls of other cities, which she believes can be applied to Halifax's current situation.

Deputy Mayor Patty Cuttell commends Cluckie's ability to manage complex challenges across various municipal responsibilities. Cluckie's strong track record in addressing similar issues has caught the attention of both her colleagues and the city's mayor, Andy Fillmore.
