Government to engage SRC on increasing athletes’ allowances

The Kenyan government plans to consult the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) regarding the possibility of raising allowances for athletes, aiming to motivate them and improve their welfare, according to Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi. Mwangi pointed out that the current local and foreign allowances given to athletes participating in international sporting events are governed by the SRC.

During an outreach event in Kandara on Friday, Mwangi implied the government's receptiveness to discussions with stakeholders, including the national football team, Harambee Stars, via the Football Kenya Federation, with a view to engaging the SRC for potential allowance hikes.

Mwangi emphasized that all athlete allowances approved by the SRC are subject to the commission's approval following a review process. He reassured the public that the ministry is currently working to address issues related to athletes' allowances, particularly for the Harambee Stars. Mwangi acknowledged that the procedure for requesting funds from the treasury can be complex and time-consuming due to necessary verifications, which sometimes lead to delays in compensating athletes. However, he noted that once the funds are approved, the ministry ensures prompt payment.

Mwangi expressed his support for the Harambee Stars in their upcoming match against Eritrea on Saturday at Nyayo Stadium. He encouraged Kenyans to rally their support for the team and urged athletes to uphold the highest standards of patriotism and honor, emphasizing the national pride of representing their country. Mwangi concluded by stressing that even amid ongoing issues requiring attention, athletes should place national duty above all, viewing wearing the national colors as the pinnacle of pride in their athletic careers.
