Google’s first Project Suncatcher AI satellite set to blast off into orbit next week

Google is set to launch its first Project Suncatcher AI satellite into low-Earth orbit next week, marking a significant step in the company's plan to put artificial intelligence data centers in space. The prototype satellite, called MVP, will carry four of Google's custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) designed to handle AI training and inference tasks.

These TPUs, which are also used on Earth, are housed in a satellite about the size of a refrigerator and will generate only about a kilowatt of power. This is just enough to run a microwave or hair dryer. The primary goal of Project Suncatcher is to study how well Google's TPUs perform in the unique conditions of outer space, including the intense vibrations and forces during launch, as well as the higher levels of radiation that can potentially damage the chips or corrupt data.

Google believes that AI data centers in space could provide a lower-cost alternative to ground-based facilities, which are energy-intensive and have faced opposition due to environmental concerns. The first launch is expected to validate Google's vision of creating a constellation of AI satellites. Google's satellite development is not an isolated effort in the space race for AI infrastructure.

SpaceX, Google's competitor in this field, has also announced plans for space-based AI infrastructure. Other startups like Starcloud Inc. and Orbital Inc. are also making significant strides in this area, raising substantial funding and posing competition to Google's Project Suncatcher.
