FULL LIST: League warns against fake Islamic titles, names MKO Abiola, Arisekola, Ishola, others

The League of Imams and Alfas in Yoruba Land has issued a warning against the unauthorised conferment of Islamic chieftaincy titles. In a statement dated September 24, 2026, the League named several current and past holders of these prestigious titles. Among the current holders are Ambassador Sharafa Tunji Ishola, Alhaji Daud Makanjuola Akinola D-Darmak, Asiwaju (Dr.) Khamis Olatunde Badmus, Alhaja Sekinat Adekola, Iya Adinni of Yoruba Land, and others.

The League noted that these titles have historically been bestowed upon Muslims who have made outstanding contributions to Islam and the Muslim Ummah in Yoruba Land. However, the League strongly cautioned against the unauthorized granting of these titles, emphasizing that they form an integral part of the organisation's heritage and traditions.

Notably, the League identified the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, also known as MKO Abiola, as a past holder of the Baba Adinni of Yoruba Land title, which was conferred upon him in the 1980s by the League's clerics. Another past holder mentioned is the late AbdulAzeez Arisekola Alao, who was the first to receive the Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land title in 1980, a title currently held by Alhaji Daud Makanjuola Akinola D-Darmak.
