From wine to ping-pong, Trump and Xi’s state dinner is heavy on historic symbolism

When US President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping in the East Room, every element of the state dinner carried significant symbolism. A toast of Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs wine, chosen to commemorate the historic 1972 "Toast to Peace" between American President Richard Nixon and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, opened the meal.

Melania Trump's office explained that the same American sparkling wine, once served at that landmark gathering, remains a staple at White House functions. In his remarks, Donald Trump highlighted the rich history of bilateral relations, noting that the first Chinese diplomatic delegation arrived in the United States 158 years ago during the Qing dynasty in 1868.

This delegation, led by Anson Burlingame alongside Chinese officials, led to the Burlingame Treaty which ensured free immigration and reciprocal rights. This treaty is considered the first fairly equitable agreement negotiated during a period dominated by Western colonialism in China. Xi Jinping emphasized the enduring bond through shared sacrifice in World War II, recalling how Chinese soldiers and civilians saved hundreds of American pilots at the expense of hundreds of thousands of Chinese lives.

He also paid tribute to ping-pong diplomacy, recalling how a table tennis match between the US and Chinese teams in April 1971 broke a two-decade deadlock in Sino-US relations. This event, inspired by the strategic foresight of leaders like Mao Zedong and Nixon, led to the normalization of relations and fundamentally altered Cold War geopolitics.

The menu for the state dinner honoring Xi Jinping was revealed on the White House website on Thursday. The US embassy in China subsequently shared a Chinese-language version of the first lady's briefing on their official WeChat account, where the post received over 100,000 views by Friday morning and more than 1,100 comments. Most of the responses were constructive, expressing support for Sino-US cooperation and arguing that competition between the two major powers should not escalate into hostility.

The US embassy stated that its back-end system was set to display all reader comments without filtering, but external censors, referring to Chinese platform regulators, reviewed and restricted user submissions, determining which comments remained publicly visible.
