French actor Arnaud Denis dies at 43 after euthanasia in Belgium

French actor and theatre director Arnaud Denis passed away at the age of 43 after receiving euthanasia in Belgium. His lawyer, Philippe Courtois, confirmed the news to AFP. Denis had previously undergone surgery for a right groin hernia in July 2023, which involved the implantation of a polypropylene mesh. He later experienced severe and persistent health issues, leading him to undergo further surgery in the United States in April 2024 to remove the implant.

Reports suggest that Denis was later diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis, attributing his declining health to an inflammatory reaction linked to the hernia implant. His claims about the cause of his illness formed part of his public campaign against complications associated with hernia implant procedures. Denis had filed a complaint with the Paris public prosecutor's office in January, alleging involuntary injuries, though the complaint was dismissed by the end of August.

As his condition worsened, Denis became an advocate for other patients who had reported complications following hernia implant surgeries. He founded the group French Victims of Hernia Prostheses, uniting individuals with similar experiences. French health authorities stepped up monitoring of hernia implants in 2025 following adverse effect reports.

In a final Facebook message, Denis expressed his decision to undergo euthanasia, citing years of suffering. His lawyer stated that the decision was made after consultations with three doctors in Namur, Belgium. Denis had openly discussed his deteriorating health earlier in the year, acknowledging that doctors had little more to offer.

He initiated euthanasia proceedings in Belgium after determining that his condition was no longer improving. Denis' career in French theatre began in 2003 when he founded the theatre company Les Compagnons de la Chimère. He directed and appeared in numerous productions, including adaptations of classic French plays such as Les Liaisons dangereuses and Les Femmes savantes.

His 2023 staging of Les Liaisons dangereuses was nominated for several Molières awards that year. Denis' death has drawn renewed attention to the experiences of patients reporting long-term complications following hernia implant surgeries, as well as his advocacy for greater awareness and patient support.
