Falcons and Packers kick off Week 3 of NFL season

In a Thursday Night Football matchup at Lambeau Field, the Atlanta Falcons saw Michael Penix Jr. get picked off on their opening drive against the Green Bay Packers. This unfortunate turn of events occurred during the first possession of the game. Penix was forced into a difficult throw within tight coverage. However, he faced an additional challenge as three Packers defenders were positioned to intercept the ball.

This mistake marked Penix's first error under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. Both teams struggled offensively in the early stages of the game. The Falcons' opening drive lasted four plays and covered only 21 yards, consuming 1:33 of the play clock. Conversely, Green Bay did not capitalize on their first offensive possession, going three-and-out.

Atlanta punted after their second drive, which lasted five plays but only gained nine yards. Meanwhile, the Packers constructed a more extended drive over eight plays, accumulating 83 yards. Quarterback Jordan Love executed a fake handoff and connected with wide receiver Christian Watson, who was unguarded behind the Falcons, for the game's first touchdown.

Love completed 5 of 6 passes during that scoring drive, which secured an early lead for the Packers. The Packers had recently emerged from a six-game losing streak that had lasted since the previous season. They had also just overcome a heartbreaking overtime loss to the New York Jets in week two. Now, the Packers aimed to capitalize on Penix's mistake and exploit it throughout the Thursday Night Football contest.
