EPL, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga call Fifa’s shelved FFE plan ‘abuse of power’, demand reform

Gianni Infantino appears destined to retain his position as FIFA president, despite a recent crisis. However, the battle over the extent of his power may only have just begun. Senior FIFA figures now view the dispute, sparked by Infantino's aborted private investment scheme, as moving from succession concerns to a struggle over the limits of his authority.

An outcome could see Infantino maintain his post but relinquish some power, or trigger a prolonged "cold war" amongst clubs, confederations, player representatives and national associations challenging FIFA on competitions, finances and control over the international schedule. A veteran sports executive told Reuters: "What is clear now ... is that he's going nowhere."

Another senior official warned that a prolonged cold war within global football could resemble a "civil war" within the sport's governance. Infantino's recent attempt to end the crisis by proposing an independent review of FIFA's governance framework was swiftly dismissed by many. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin criticized the move, stating that while the project that divided world football may be "abandoned," the trust shattered remains absent.

For Infantino, the only path forward now is a substantial reform to convince opponents that power within FIFA has genuinely shifted. Possible compromises could involve creating new bodies to dilute the president's authority or a "hot-cold war" where stakeholders fight over every major initiative. This could lead to challenges over World Cups, Club competitions, financial distributions, player release, and more. The situation highlights the critical importance of unity within global sports organizations.
