EFCC: How some Persons who owned N100k as new govt officials retired with millions of dollars

Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), expressed deep concern over the scale of alleged corruption in the Nigerian public sector. He revealed that the commission receives over 20,000 petitions annually regarding public corruption, highlighting the gravity of the issue at hand. During a ceremony commemorating the 80th birthday of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi, Olukoyede pointed out that some of the cases under investigation involved public officials who experienced a significant transformation in their financial status after taking office.

He emphasized that these officials, previously holding modest financial positions, were later found to have amassed millions of dollars and naira within a few years of their tenure. Olukoyede underscored that the consequences of corruption are not confined to the legal system but affect every Nigerian. He urged the collective effort of Nigerians to reject the activities of corrupt leaders and stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
