EDGE, TKMS explore joint underwater surveillance and protection systems

Dubai - EDGE Group and German shipbuilder and defense firm TKMS have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop underwater surveillance and protection technologies, as the UAE and Germany strengthen their defense and security cooperation. The agreement was signed in Munich during the UAE's state visit to Germany and forms part of a broader initiative to enhance collaboration in the sector.

Under the MoU, the companies will examine the integration of multiple platforms and sensor systems to create a more comprehensive understanding of underwater activity. The collaboration aims to assess how TKMS' platform capabilities and EDGE's systems expertise can be combined to support surveillance and protection in the maritime domain. By integrating several platforms and sensors, the companies hope to establish a broader situational picture and enhance responses to various maritime threats.

Miguel Ángel López Borrego, Deputy Chairman of TKMS, and Omar Al Zaabi, President, Commercial at EDGE, signed the agreement. Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO of EDGE, emphasized the importance of securing the maritime domain for the UAE's national and economic resilience. He stated that EDGE is building the necessary capabilities through partnerships such as the one with TKMS.

TKMS highlighted that the agreement builds upon its existing relationship with the UAE and aligns with the broader defense and security initiative agreed upon by both governments. The collaboration comes as there is growing demand for naval capabilities linked to maritime security and the protection of commercial shipping routes.
