Ed Policy may regret not waiting on Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutenkunst contracts

After Ed Policy took over as the Packers' president and CEO, it became apparent that 2025 would be a pivotal season for coach Matt LaFleur and General Manager Brian Gutekunst. Both were under contracts until 2026 and faced the possibility of being let go after the season. The Packers made it to the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the NFC, but ultimately lost in the wild-card round after a significant halftime lead against the Bears.

This led to new contracts for LaFleur and Gutekunst, extending their terms by one or more full seasons beyond 2026. This decision complicates any consideration of removing them from their positions this year, as the new deals provide them with job security. While there was a time when a lame-duck coach could negatively impact the team, the current NFL climate is more fluid, with coaches and staff potentially leaving after each season.

Policy's father, Carmen, held a different view on the importance of continuity in coaching. However, in today's NFL, the priority is to focus on the current season, making the extensions advantageous for the Packers. While LaFleur and Gutekunst are not entirely immune to potential dismissal, they will still receive buyouts and their replacements will be compensated.

In retrospect, it would have been prudent to delay the extensions to avoid the financial burden of buying out their contracts and hiring new personnel.
