Ebola spread in DRC linked to delayed detection, insecurity — Africa CDC

The United States government has announced an additional $267 million in funding to combat the Ebola outbreak in central Africa, as part of their ongoing efforts to control the deadly virus. The State Department made the announcement during the UN General Assembly, alongside a call for further financial contributions from other nations to reach the goal of $2 billion to combat the disease, primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The outbreak was first identified in May and is the second most lethal to date, following a previous epidemic in West Africa between 2014 and 2016. Congolese Prime Minister, Judith Suminwa Tuluka, characterized the current outbreak as a "major test" for her nation, emphasizing that "fighting this epidemic is an absolute priority."

She further stated that, despite having contained 16 previous outbreaks, the DRC is leveraging recognized scientific and operational expertise, backed by national mobilization and international support, to achieve tangible results. The US commitment to the fight against the outbreak now stands at $886 million, which includes $107 million from the Department of Health and Human Services, in addition to the State Department's funding.

This assistance aims to aid countries in managing the outbreak at its origin, covering aspects such as the establishment of treatment facilities, the provision of diagnostic tools, and medical countermeasures for healthcare workers operating in the field.
