Dyfed-Powys Police cops to cyberattack, staff data potentially nicked

Dyfed-Powys Police has experienced a cyberattack that rendered some of its non-emergency systems inoperable, with the incident being discovered on September 14. While emergency services, including 999 and 101 telephone services, remained fully operational, online and email contact were temporarily unavailable but have since been restored.

Despite the disruption, an investigation into the incident has been underway since its discovery, with cybersecurity experts brought in to secure the force's systems. The force has not yet determined the identity of the attackers, the method of intrusion, or whether ransomware was involved. Furthermore, there is an unresolved question as to whether any employee data may have been accessed or compromised during the attack.

At present, there is no evidence to suggest that the personal information of the public has been accessed or compromised. Dyfed-Powys Police has informed the Information Commissioner's Office about the incident, though the exact date of notification remains undisclosed. The regional organized crime unit, Tarian, is leading the investigation through its regional cybercrime unit.

The police have assured the public that they are taking all necessary measures to protect their information and maintain system security. They emphasize that the public's data appears to have remained unaccessed by the attackers, but the status of staff data remains under investigation.
