Dorothy movie review: Karthik Subbaraj’s film will make everyone uncomfortable

Dorothy is undeniably raw, potentially the most unfiltered film Karthik Subbaraj has ever created. In the realm of recent Tamil cinema, it may even be considered one of the most rustic movies. The only cinematic element is music, with Ilaiyaraaja's powerful score only amplifying the film's authenticity. The narrative unfolds in the 1990s, depicting a village where caste, class, toxic masculinity, and violence are rampant.

Two childhood friends, Karthi and Subbu, embody the men they grew up around, indulging in stereotypical masculine pursuits. However, their lives are irrevocably altered when Dorothy, a Malayali, becomes Subbu's sister-in-law, challenging the conventions of masculinity and savarna-ism. Karthik Subbaraj's Dorothy stands out as his most political and personal film, tackling a multitude of issues head-on, from casteism and patriarchy to violence and gender politics, with unwavering conviction.

While his intentions may be commendable, the film's impact falls short due to its preachy writing and problematic portrayals.
