Canada considers response to possible US military action

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has contemplated the remote prospect of US military action against Canada, according to an interview with The New York Times. In the interview, Carney revealed that his administration had meticulously analyzed the "extreme tail risk" scenario, where the US might launch a military strike against Canada, and had prepared for such an eventuality, without elaborating further.

"I think you have a responsibility in these roles to look at extreme tail risk," Carney stated to the Times, emphasizing that this was merely a risk management strategy and not a favored outcome. The article mentions that tensions between the two neighboring countries have heightened under the previous US President Donald Trump.

In terms of military strength, the US clearly outweighs Canada, with over 2 million active-duty and reserve troops compared to Canada's fewer than 200,000. Moreover, the US military boasts of 65 military submarines, whereas Canada only has four. Despite this, Carney highlighted Canada's unique geographical advantages, such as its extensive coastline and proximity to the Arctic, which have driven the government to ramp up defense spending since he assumed office.

The US President, Trump, has often referred to Canada as the "51st state," and initiated a trade war with it that escalated last month, marked by a series of tit-for-tat tariffs on various products. Despite the recent tensions, Carney affirmed that he maintains frequent communication with Trump, describing their relationship as efficient and beneficial.

Carney expressed optimism about resuming trade negotiations with the US, stating that re-establishing amicable ties would be advantageous for both nations.
