Cale Hellums has 3 TD runs to rally Army over Temple 21-17 in Owls' American Conference opener

Quarterback Cale Hellums drove Army to a 21-17 victory over Temple in the Owls' American Conference opener on Friday. The senior led the Black Knights (2-1, 1-1) with 104 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries, totaling 281 yards on the ground. Hellums started the game with a 15-yard touchdown run, giving Army an early 7-0 lead. The Owls (1-3) responded on Temple's second play, as Samuel Brown V caught a short pass from Ajari Sheppard for an 78-yard touchdown, tying the game 7-7 at halftime.

Hellums continued to dominate in the third quarter, scoring on a 12-yard run for a 14-7 Army lead. Sheppard connected with Colin Chase on a 67-yard scoring pass, tying the game 14-all heading into the fourth quarter. Carl Hardin kicked a 29-yard field goal, extending Temple's lead to 17-14 with 7:38 remaining.

Hellums sealed the win with a 3-yard touchdown run on a 12-play, 72-yard drive that consumed 6:02 off the clock. Temple's Sam Sheppard completed 243 yards and two touchdowns on 11-of-20 passing in his first career start. Brown had 96 yards on 10 carries. Temple head coach K.C. Keeler had moved the game to Friday, citing the Sept. 29 AC/DC show at Lincoln Financial Field. Army's next game is at Louisiana Tech on Oct. 3, while Temple will host South Florida on the same date.
