Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. apologizes for comments about his $500 million contract

Toronto Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. issued an apology on Friday for remarks made during a Spanish language interview about his $500 million, 14-year contract. During the interview, the star player claimed he was being paid for his past accomplishments rather than future performance. The controversial clip from a show set to air on October 4th surfaced on Wednesday.

Guerrero explained that he was paid for his past achievements, stating "They paid me for what I already accomplished." This triggered confusion among fans and commentators. After facing criticism, Guerrero expressed regret through a translator, acknowledging that his teammates and fans needed an apology. He emphasized his commitment to continue working hard to make his contract a successful one.

A six-time All-Star, Guerrero has a career batting average of .285, 192 home runs, 647 RBIs, and an .840 OPS. He played a crucial role in the Blue Jays' World Series run last year, hitting eight postseason home runs. However, Guerrero has struggled this season, averaging .263 with nine home runs and 56 RBIs, hampered by a back injury, concussion, and right hamstring tightness.

His contract, the third-largest in total dollars, includes a record $325 million signing bonus to protect against potential work stoppages. Guerrero has spoken to his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, and also apologized to his Blue Jays teammates.
