Bangkok home fire ends with man found dead, heavy weapons, and explosives recovered

BANGKOK — On Thursday morning, a man was discovered deceased following an alleged incident of setting fire to his family's residence and engaging in gunfire within the Bang Phlat district of Bangkok. Emergency services were summoned to the house after nearby residents reported a fire and heard gunshots. Upon arrival, police encountered a man who was armed inside the property and refused to yield, prompting the establishment of a 200-meter exclusion zone and the evacuation of adjacent residents.

Firefighters faced a challenging task in containing the flames while the man remained inside, intermittently firing shots at intervals. A SWAT team consisting of more than ten officers was dispatched to surround the dwelling as firefighters worked diligently to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighboring properties. The fire was eventually brought under control after more than an hour.

Subsequent to the fire's suppression, authorities discovered the man deceased on the second floor of the house, seated in a chair with a firearm in his possession, according to preliminary reports. Police subsequently uncovered a multitude of firearms, ammunition, and items believed to be explosive devices within the premises, including one located in a room neighboring the area where the man was found.

Explosive ordnance disposal experts were called upon to assess and safely dispose of the hazardous materials. The deceased man has been identified as the son of a former military officer who held the rank of major general.
