Azmoun makes Iran return months after World Cup snub

Tehran, Iran - Star striker Sardar Azmoun has returned to the Iranian national football team following a months-long absence, making his comeback in a friendly match against Uzbekistan. The 31-year-old, who currently plays for UAE club Shabab Al Ahli, was recalled by Coach Amir Ghalenoei as preparations intensify for next year's Asian Cup.

Azmoun, Iran's third-highest scorer with 57 goals in 92 appearances, was initially left out of the World Cup squad in May due to criticism in Iranian media over a photo posted on his Instagram alongside an Emirati, a supporter of Washington's stance against Iran. In an emotional Instagram post, Azmoun expressed his joy at returning to the jersey that had been so important to him, stating that he was not upset with anyone and was simply happy to have the opportunity to represent his country once more.

The controversy surrounding Azmoun's absence from the World Cup squad echoed similar concerns raised during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he had posted messages appearing to support anti-government protests, leading to calls from hardliners.
